Adequate nourishment, constant medical support, and clean sanitation services are some of the guarantees India has mentioned in its request to extradite businessman Mehul Choksi for a trial related to the Rs 12,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. Choksi, who is 66 years old, was taken into custody in Antwerp, Belgium, in April. His legal team claims he has serious health issues, including cancer, and should not be held in jail. In correspondence to the Belgian officials, the Ministry of Home Affairs has provided information about the facility where Choksi will be kept once he arrives in India. It has mentioned that he will be housed in barrack number 12 of the Arthur Road jail complex located in Mumbai. "The detention area where he will stay has access to a clean, thick cotton mat (also referred to as a mattress), a pillow, bed sheets, and a blanket. However, a metal or wooden bed may be provided for medical reasons. There will be enough light and fresh air, and space for his personal items is available," the letter states.
The correspondence further mentions that Choksi will have plenty of clean drinking water and 24-hour medical services. It also indicates he will be given enough food and allowed out of his cell for physical activity and leisure for more than an hour each day. The cells in the Mumbai jail are cleaned daily, and hygiene is maintained, as noted by the Home Ministry in the letter. "Mumbai is a coastal city with a tropical climate that experiences both wet and dry seasons. The weather is mostly pleasant throughout the year and is rarely extreme. Therefore, heating in the cell is not necessary. There is no air conditioning available, and it is generally not needed given Mumbai's climate," the letter concludes.
