On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become the second-longest serving leader in India’s history during consecutive terms, reaching a total of 4,078 continuous days in office. This milestone will exceed Indira Gandhi’s uninterrupted time as prime minister from 1964 to 1977, and he will be second only to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, a source mentioned on Thursday. Modi, who is 74 years old and is the first prime minister born after India gained independence, took his oath for a third consecutive term in June last year after first assuming office on May 26, 2014. The leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also held the record for the longest time in office as a prime minister from a party other than Congress. On July 25, PM Modi will officially have been in power for 4,078 days through three consecutive terms. "On this date, he (Modi) will become the second longest-serving prime minister in a row in India, surpassing Indira Gandhi's 4,077 days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977," stated the source.

Indira Gandhi also served as prime minister from January 14, 1980, until she was assassinated on October 31, 1984. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, remains the longest-serving prime minister in India’s history, holding office for 16 years and 286 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. Prior to his role as prime minister, Modi was the longest-serving chief minister of Gujarat, serving from 2001 until 2014. "He is the only non-Congress prime minister to have completed at least two full terms and to have been re-elected three times… He is also the first non-Congress leader to win a majority on his own in a Lok Sabha election," the quoted source indicated.

In 2014, the BJP won a commanding majority in the central government with 272 seats, with Modi as the party's candidate for prime minister. Five years later, the party saw an increase in its seats, securing 303 out of the 543 in the Lok Sabha. Although the BJP did not reach the halfway point in 2024, it remained the largest single party and continued to govern for a third consecutive term with the aid of its NDA partners. "He is the first sitting prime minister since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to be re-elected with a majority and the only prime minister apart from Jawaharlal Nehru to win three elections in a row as the leader of a party," the source added.
