Fasting can provide various health advantages, but it is just as crucial to know when to end it as it is to know when to begin. "People can benefit from fasting, but it's important for them to recognize the right moment to start and finish," states Dr. Sameer Bhati, a Public Health Analyst. The body gives clear signals when it craves food. Overlooking these signals may cause more harm than good. "If you find yourself feeling consistently dizzy, weak, having headaches, or struggling to focus, it might mean your body is under stress," Dr. Bhati explains. These signs may show that your blood sugar is dropping and your energy levels are low. Other signs to watch for include feeling nauseous, extremely tired, or irritable. "These symptoms often indicate that glycogen stores are running low and there could be changes in electrolyte balance," Dr. Bhati adds. While very low blood sugar is rare in healthy people, these signs should always be taken seriously.

Some individuals must be extra careful. "For those with diabetes, hormonal issues, or a history of eating disorders, fasting should always be done under medical supervision," advises Dr. Bhati. Even mild symptoms should not be ignored. Staying hydrated is also very important during fasting. "If you show signs of dehydration even after drinking enough fluids, it’s crucial to break the fast," he points out. Extended or unplanned fasting without expert advice can lead to a lack of nutrients and problems with metabolism. However, not all types of fasting come with the same level of risk. "Methods like intermittent fasting—such as the 16:8 strategy or occasional 24-hour fasts—are usually safer when performed correctly and with enough hydration," Dr. Sameer Bhati notes. In the end, fasting should enhance health, not push physical limits. "The time you notice your body moving from being adaptive to distressed is when you should stop fasting," he stresses. Paying attention to your body rather than just adhering to a set schedule is essential for achieving safe and lasting outcomes.
